Rail station opening is delayed

Published: Thu, 02 Oct 2008 09:00:44

A new railway station near East Midlands Airport will not be opening on time, Network Rail has confirmed.

The £25 million East Midlands Parkway station at Ratcliffe on Soar was due to open on 14 December and will eventually offer services to London.

It was hit by delays after residents called for a 300m access road to be formally adopted as public highway.

It is now hoped the station, near junction 24 of the M1 and East Midlands Airport, will open early next year.

East Midlands Trains managing director, Tim Shoveller, said:

"Whilst we had hoped that the new Parkway station would be open in time for this timetable change, we also believe it's crucial to open a station that meets the needs of all of its users.

"We will continue to work closely with Network Rail to open the station early in 2009."

The Parkway station, which will have 850 parking spaces, has been on the drawing board for 10 years.
