Real Help for East Midlands Employers

Published: Tue, 15 Sep 2009 10:47:50

Employers across the East Midlands should take advantage of the real help they can get now to recruit and train workers to help them thorough the recession. That was the message from Minister for the East Midlands Phil Hope when he met local businesses in Grantham, Lincolnshire.

The Minister organised a Regional Employer roadshow to tell businesses what help is available to them during the recession.
Local businesses and employers could be in line for funding towards recruitment and in-work training to help their business through the downturn – and to emerge stronger when the recovery happens.
Some of the real help on offer nationwide includes:
More than £1 billion this year to help 130,000 employers recruit apprentices
£1 billion of Future Jobs Fund money to create 150,000 new jobs
£925 million this year through Train to Gain for employers to develop their own staff

Speaking at Grantham Arts Centre, Mr Hope said:

“The Government is taking action to help businesses cope with the current economic challenges and emerge stronger on the other side.
“It’s crucial that employers know what help is available and how they can access that help.

“That’s what this event was about. I met with employers from a range of businesses, large and small from all over the East Midlands today to tell them about the help they can take advantage of.
“That could be a cash subsidy of £1,000 to recruit a new member of staff or maybe £1500 to help with training costs.”

Chrissy Roberts, Managing Director and Owner of Leicestershire family run cleaning service Little Treasures, told the roadshow how the Government’s Work Trials system helped her recruit new staff.

Ms Roberts said:

“Work Trials offers all concerned the very best of both worlds, candidates get a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities whilst taking this trial period to determine if we are the sort of company they wish to work for,” said Chrissie.

“Nine of our Work Trials candidates have joined the company and become valuable members of my team. We now have a highly integrated and eclectic team of people with a diverse variety of skills, life experiences and social backgrounds which truly reflect our local community.”
