Climate Change Events

GOEM organise events to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change and promote the economic, social and environmental benefits of adapting to climate change.

UK Climate Projections 09 (UKCP09)

The East Midlands regional launch event took place on 2 September 2009.

The East Midlands launch of the UK Climate Projections 09 (UKCP09) was the first regional event following the national launch by Hilary Benn on 18th June. It explored the implications of the projections for the East Midlands; this will be supported by a further series of sub-regional events in November to consider issues in more depth.

Whilst we must continue to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions we also need to prepare for change which, due to past emissions, is inevitable. The UKCP09 includes key findings, scientific reports and pre-prepared maps, which will be of use to public and private sector organisations that are affected by weather and climate and/or make long-term investment decisions.

The keynote speaker was Peter Unwin, Director General from Defra's Natural Environment Group. There followed a series of speakers which are listed below with links to their presentations:

UKCP09 - Peter Walton of UKCIP
What the changes mean in practice in the East Midlands - Sarah Fowler from the Environment Agency
Impacts on Health - Dr David Pencheon, Director of the NHS Sustainable Development Unit
Impacts on the East Coast - Charles Beardall from the Environment Agency

To complement the regional launch of UKCP09 on 2 September in Nottingham, 4 sub regional events were held in the week commencing 9 November 2009. These free events were aimed at helping people in businesses, local authorities, partnerships and communities, or with an interest in east coast issues understand the potential risks climate change poses to them. The programmes and presentations for each of these days are given under Related Documents.

East Midlands Expo

EXPO in the East Midlands is an annual event focusing on sustainability in the way the region works and lives to ensure the environment is protected for the future. This can be in the way we work, travel and even eat. Expo provides the largest gathering of suppliers and buyers under one roof, and is an opportunity to find out how your company or organisation can rise to the challenge of climate change and create a more sustainable future.

East Midlands Expo is organised by a partnership of East Midlands Centre for the Built Environment (emcbe), Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM), East Midlands Regional Assembly (EMRA) and East Midlands Development Agency (emda).

EXPO 2008 "Acting on Climate Change" took place at the EPIC Centre at the Lincolnshire Showground and focused on the ways we can respond innovatively to this challenge as a region. The EXPO provided a showcase of solutions for reducing our carbon impact of our buildings, our use of energy and resources, the goods and services we consume, and the ways we move around. There were exhibitors from a wide range of businesses and organisations that are playing their part in improving peoples quality of life. A local producers market also provided the opportunity to purchase local produce.

EXPO 2009 takes place at the Walkers Stadium in Leicester on 8 October. The theme is "Greening the Economy" and brings together a wide range of organisations and businesses to showcase low carbon technologies and solutions. More information is available via the EMRA website.

Adaptation 2009

'Adaptation 2009', a major climate change adaptation event, was held in Leicester on 29 January 2009. Aimed primarily at local authorities and their partners the event focused on how we can adapt to climate change.

The event formed part of an ongoing sequence of initiatives designed to assist local authorities and their partners deliver against the climate change indicators in the Local Government Framework.
