Regional Development Agencies: the National Picture

Government Offices work with the nine Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) on behalf of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).

Government Offices are responsible for:

  • sponsoring each of the RDAs
  • administering appointments to the boards of the RDAs in line with BERR guidelines
  • advising and liaising with RDAs on strategic, business and action planning
  • working with RDAs on the delivery of their agreed targets and objectives
  • financial monitoring, including payment of grant in aid
  • reporting on progress against objectives, annually and throughout the year

Government Offices work with the BERR to appoint new board members to the RDAs. Panels in each region made up of the Regional Director of the Government Office and the Chair of the RDA, with an independent assessor. The panel selects the candidates for interview and then submits their recommendations for appointment to BERR ministers.

The BERR is keen that the panels reflect the diversity of each region, and are eager to receive applications from women, people with disabilities and black, minority ethnic people. The recruitment process is carried out in accordance with guidance issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
