Arts and Creative Industries

Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM) promotes Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) policies in region by linking DCMS policy with the aims of other Government Departments. GOEM also influences the development of new strategies so that the potential contribution of the Arts and Creative Industries is properly recognised.

Access to the arts can have a lasting and transforming effect on many aspects of people's lives as well as their neighbourhoods, communities, regions.

The aim of the Government Office is to maximise the contribution of the arts sector, and through this to improve the quality of life of all. It also works to foster the creative industries, which are those industries with their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.

The Arts

DCMS aims to maximise the contribution of the arts sector and improve the quality of life of all through the arts. DCMS works to:

  • Broaden access for all to a rich and varied artistic and cultural life
  • Ensure that the artistic activity it funds aspires to be world class in terms of standards and innovation
  • Ensure that everyone has the opportunity to develop artistic talent and to achieve excellence in the arts
  • Develop the educational potential of all the nations artistic and cultural resources
  • Raise the standards of artistic and cultural education and training
  • Ensure an adequate skills supply for the arts and cultural sectors
  • Reduce the number of those that feel excluded from society by using the arts

Creative Industries

DCMS assists the creative industries by raising their profile and helping them achieve their full economic potential. It defines the creative industries as those industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.

Key Organisations

Arts Council England is the national development agency for the arts in England. It is responsible for distributing public money from the Government and the National Lottery to artists and arts organisations. It also provides advice and information, commissions research and forges partnerships that benefit the arts sector. It has a national office and nine regional offices.

At Arts Council East Midlands, in the three years to 2011, will invest £46.5 million from government and the National Lottery into the region’s arts; the focus will be not only on igniting the ambitions of artists, arts organisations and regional partners but also raising the region’s international profile as a place for artistic innovation.

East Midlands Media (EM Media) is the regional agency for all screen media in the East Midlands. EM Media invests in the region’s creative talent, supporting and developing projects and activities.

EM Media has had considerable success, making its name through investments in a host of award-winning British films. The agency’s portfolio includes Shane Meadows’ BAFTA winner This Is England, actress Samantha Morton’s directorial debut The Unloved and Anton Corbijn’s award-winning Control, the acclaimed biopic of Joy Division’s troubled front man Ian Curtis.

EM Media works in partnership with a range of organisations at a local, regional and national level including GOEM, the UK Film Council, the East Midlands Development Agency and Screen England; the network of English Screen Agencies.
