Access to the arts can have a lasting and transforming effect on many
aspects of people's lives as well as their neighbourhoods, communities,
regions.
The aim of the Government Office is to maximise the contribution of the
arts sector, and through this to improve the quality of life of all. It
also works to foster the creative industries, which are those industries
with their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have
a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and
exploitation of intellectual property.

Creative Industries
DCMS assists the creative industries by raising their profile and helping
them achieve their full economic potential. It defines the creative
industries as those industries which have their origin in individual
creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job
creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.
Key Organisations
Arts Council England is the national development agency
for the arts in England. It is responsible for distributing public money
from the Government and the National Lottery to artists and arts
organisations. It also provides advice and information, commissions
research and forges partnerships that benefit the arts sector. It has a
national office and nine regional offices.
At Arts Council East Midlands, in the three years to 2011, will invest
£46.5 million from government and the National Lottery into the
region’s arts; the focus will be not only on igniting the
ambitions of artists, arts organisations and regional partners but also
raising the region’s international profile as a place for artistic
innovation.

East Midlands Media (EM Media) is the regional agency for
all screen media in the East Midlands. EM Media invests in the
region’s creative talent, supporting and developing projects and
activities.
EM Media has had considerable success, making its name through investments
in a host of award-winning British films. The agency’s portfolio
includes Shane Meadows’ BAFTA winner This Is England, actress
Samantha Morton’s directorial debut The Unloved and Anton
Corbijn’s award-winning Control, the acclaimed biopic of Joy
Division’s troubled front man Ian Curtis.
EM Media works in partnership with a range of organisations at a local,
regional and national level including GOEM, the UK Film Council, the East
Midlands Development Agency and Screen England; the network of English
Screen Agencies.
