Community Support Officers

Community Safety

Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM) is responsible for the delivery of the National Drug Strategy, Crime Reduction Strategy and communities' agenda in the region. We provide support to Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships and Drug Action Teams and provide a link between them and central government.

Government Offices make a regional contribution to the Government’s aim to build a safe, just and tolerant society, protect the public and ensure the balance between the rights and responsibilities of individuals, families and communities is properly maintained. Government Offices also deliver the four key themes of the National Drug Strategy. More information on the national picture

We work closely with the 40 Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) and the nine Drug Action Teams (DATs) in the region, providing a link between them and central government. The overall objective of the partnerships is to reduce crime, fear of crime, anti-social behaviour and drug-related crime. We support improvements in the performance of the CDRPs and DATs and oversee the closer working and possible merger of the partnerships.

Safer Communities
The Safer and Stronger Communities Directorate in the Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM) is  responsible for the delivery of the regional element of the Government's national crime reduction strategy  Cutting Crime.

Working in partnership with key partners including the National Offender Management Service (NOMS), National Treatment Agency (NTA) and Youth Justice Board (YJB), GOEM provides the link between national and local delivery of PSAs 23 Make communities safer and 25 Reduce the harm caused by alcohol and illegal drugs.

We look to:

  • strengthen national policies by providing advice on regional and local circumstances and implementation, particularly in respect of alcohol and the Assessment of Policing and Community Safety (APACS), with a supporting role on neighbourhood policing.
  • integrate regional strategies, particularly those relating to crime reduction, offender management, substance misuse and criminal justice.   In addition we also look to ensure that other regional strategies, including those relating to young people and social exclusion, take due account of community safety issues.
  • drive local delivery through Local Area Agreements (LAAs) and Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs).   We seek to promote more effective local partnership working and delivery through the adoption of the Hallmarks of Effective Partnership and use of APACS, targeting our support on those areas that are face the greatest challenges.
